Nintendo's Next Dedicated Game System Is Codenamed 'NX'

By Alex Bullock

Nintendo have unexpectedly revealed their next hardware project, codenamed 'NX', as part of a Japanese press conference for their new mobile partnership.

Discussing their deal with mobile firm DeNA to create Nintendo content for smartphones, president Satoru Iwata moved on to talking about a unified account system across all platforms, including one as-yet unknown.

Nintendo has decided to deploy its video game business on smart devices, but it is not because we have lost our passion or vision for the business of dedicated video game systems. As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand new concept under the development codename 'NX'.

We'll have to wait until "next year" for further details, but feel free to begin speculating now. Though Iwata himself has repeatedly stated that the Wii U is in it for the long haul, speculation has long been rife that the company would focus entirely on handhelds, or even merge the two into a portable console.
