EA Loses Appeal But Vows To Fight Onward on NCAA Football Franchise
Sam Keller, former Nebraska quarterback, has been able to defeat an appeal by Electronic Arts, makers of the NCAA Football series of games. EA claimed they could use the likeness of actual players in their game, which Sam Keller sued to prevent. Keller won the preliminary lawsuit, and is one of the reasons the NCAA dropped its licensing with EA earlier this month. However, EA vows to continue fighting.
Since college players are not paid by EA, unlike pro players under the NFL Players Association, Keller argued the practice was unfair and college players deserve to get the same sort of compensation. This, though, would violate the NCAA's fight to not pay college football players.
Ironically, the state of Nebraska has a law on the books to pay college athletes if and when the NCAA's threats are removed from the practice.
