Blizzard Will Restore Warcraft III, Diablo II And StarCraft.
Blizzard is planning to work on making sure that some of their older games will still run smoothly on newer hardware and operating systems. Initially it will be Warcraft III, Diablo II and StarCraft who will receive this update.
In a recent career listing they state the following: "Compelling stories. Intense multiplayer. Endless replayability. Qualities that made StarCraft, Warcraft III, and Diablo II the titans of their day. Evolving operating systems, hardware, and online services have made them more difficult to be experienced by their loyal followers or reaching a new generation. We’re restoring them to glory, and we need your engineering talents, your passion, and your ability to get tough jobs done."
In other words we should probably not expect to see any major graphical upgrades, but rather a tweak to the game performance to ensure that they still run smoothly on newer tech while also having online access. Hopefully Blizzard will also include a widescreen resolution for these games, as that's something the fans have been trying to fix themselves for a few years already.
The job description certainly implies that the goal is to make sure that these games will be working again, and that the employees will work on implementing a few new features as well.
The first two Warcraft games
Unfortunately there is no mention of Warcraft: Orcs & Humans or Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, which both are in dire need of some work to be able to run on modern machines. Back in 2013 we heard that Blizzard would be working on making sure that these two games would get an update, but there has been no news on them since.
In less than a week they will release the final chapter of StarCraft II, the expansion pack called Legacy of the Void. It is not officially known what the strategy team will be working on, but rumor has it that WarCraft IV might be on the agenda.
